Lewis Carroll
[Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]
Keynotes

  Born:  Daresbury, Cheshire, 1832.

  Died:  1898.

English mathematician and, as Lewis Carroll, writer of children's books.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born in Daresbury, Cheshire in 1832.

Between 1855 and 1881 he was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was based on stories told by the author to three little girls, one of whom was Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church College.

Dodgson never acknowledged being the author of works published under the name 'Lewis Carroll', preferring to be recognised as the writer of several mathematics books which were published under his own name.

As well as being a mathematician and storyteller, he was also a pioneer of portrait photography.

Works with publication dates:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)
Through the Looking Glass
(1872)
The Hunting of the Snark
(1876)
