Robert Burns
Keynotes

Born:  Alloway, Ayrshire, 25th January 1759.

  Died:  21st July 1796.

  Scottish Poet.

Burns' father leased a farm in Ayrshire in 1766 which was called 'Mount Oliphant'.  In 1777 they moved to another farm called 'Lochlea', but despite his hard work on both farms, he died penniless in 1784.

After the death of his father, Robert Burns became the tenant of a farm called 'Mossgiel' and took his family to live there.

In 1786 he was engaged to marry Jean Armour, but her father refused to allow the marriage to take place, despite Jean being pregnant by Robert.  This drove him into a relationship with another woman, Mary Campbell, who sadly died soon afterwards.

Jean gave birth to twins on 3rd September 1786.  Robert and Jean were eventually reconciled and married in 1788.

In 1786 Robert Burns went to Edinburgh following the successful publication of Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect.

In 1788 Burns leased a farm in in Dumfriesshire called 'Ellisland Farm'.

In 1789 he found employment with the Excise Service having finally given up trying to make a living as a farmer.  He moved to Dumfries in 1791, where he lived until his death from rheumatic heart-disease in 1796.

Burns songs are included in Scots Musical Museum (1787 - 1803) by James Johnson, and Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice (1793 - 1818) by George Thomson.
