Robert Louis Stevenson
Keynotes

Born:  8 Howard Place, Edinburgh, 13th November 1850.

  Died:  Samoa, 1894.

Scottish poet and novelist.  Probably best known for his novels Treasure Island (1883), Kidnapped (1886) and The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850.  He was baptised Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson, but he dropped the name 'Balfour' and changed 'Lewis' to 'Louis' at about the age of eighteen.  From 1867 he studied law at Edinburgh University, qualified as an advocate and was called to the bar in 1875, although he never practised law.

Poor health took Stevenson to Europe where he travelled in the hope of improving his constitution, and in 1879 he travelled to the USA where he married Fanny Osbourne (née Van de Grift), before returning to Britain in 1880.

In 1890 he settled in Samoa in the South Pacific where he hoped to be cured of tuberculosis, but sadly, in 1894, he succumbed to the disease and died.

Robert Louis Stevenson produced some of his later work in collaboration with his stepson, Lloyd Osbourne.
